About this piece
A Chinese-style guardian lion with a glossy vermilion-red finish, seated with one forepaw resting on a patterned ball. Its spiral-curled mane, open toothy mouth, chest ornament and scrolling tail are set above a stepped rectangular pedestal with key-fret borders and relief panels. The figure appears to be carved wood beneath a brushed red coating, though the wood species, coating composition and method of manufacture are unconfirmed. Wear and finish losses expose a tan substrate along the base edges and underside; small holes are also visible underneath. No readable maker’s mark is present, and the date and origin are unconfirmed. Height: 6.5 inches Depth: 4 inches
