About this piece
A pair of Chinese-style ceramic wall-pocket vases with rounded baluster fronts, flared mouths and flat backs pierced for hanging. Each is flanked by two applied climbing boys in red jackets and dark blue trousers beneath gilt lion-mask ring handles. Famille rose / Rose Medallion-style decoration combines long-tailed birds, pink flowers and fruit with seated figures around the neck. Dense floral bands and lattice-pattern borders frame the glossy polychrome decoration. The ceramic body is probably porcelain; maker, origin and date are unconfirmed. The photographed back shows long hairline cracks and surface marks, while the underside shows residue and a foot-edge chip. The photographs do not establish whether the fine outlined decoration incorporates transfers.
